The Nebraska boy was on vacation with his family at the Orlando theme park. He was playing in about a foot of water when the alligator came out of the lake and attacked.
The 2-year-old Toddler was grabbed by an alligator while walking along a lagoon at Disney World's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa on Tuesday night. After 18 hours the frantic search has come to a tragic end.
According to Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings, a dive team first noticed remains of what they expected to be the Nebraska boy's body underwater at around 1:45 p.m. "Autopsy has to confirm, but there's likely no question in my mind that the child was drowned by the alligator," he continued. "The child was found within the immediate area of where he was last seen. It took some time to go through, but our divers were able to locate the body using sonar equipment."
Demings said: "Of course, the family was distraught, but also somewhat relieved that we were able to find their son with his body intact and that his body was located so they can come to grips with what happened. It was a tough message to deliver to them to let them know that their child was dead."
Florida Fish and Wildlife Executive Director Nick Wiley said in a press conference that they have already tracked down five alligators, and will compare bite marks to see which animal killed the child.
There were "no swimming" signs posted around the area. However there was no signage warning visitors about the presence of alligators.
